Tenufa Bakehila – Building Hope helps families in Israel whose dream is to have a functioning kitchen, adequate hot water to bathe their young children and a roof that holds back the rain and the wind.
With skilled hands and warm hearts, our tradesmen and family counselors help Israel’s neediest families get back on track and move towards a brighter future. Our efforts produce decent and safe homes for deserving families, creating positive momentum that helps them break out of the cycle of poverty.
The renovations/repairs that we perform include repairing moldy, peeling and crumbling walls and ceilings, leaky roofs, hazardous electrical and plumbing problems, door and window frames, loose tiles, kitchen counters and cabinets and more. We also install grab rails and mobility aids in bathrooms and stairways.
While our tradesmen work in the home, our social worker helpsfamily members overcome challenges in the areas of employment, health and welfare.
We are the only organization in Israel that takes such a holistic approach to family rehabilitation – and we do so for hundreds of families each year in 11 cities across the country.
All of our clients are referred to us by municipal social services, who are unable to provide the home repairs that their clients need. This is a heartbreaking Catch-22 situation: these families often obtained ownership of their homes through government programs, but now, because they own their homes, are ineligible for aid. With no ability to afford even basic repairs, these families find themselves living in terrible conditions with no viable alternative.
Tenufa Bakehila, with the support of its donors throughout the world, fills the gap. To date, we have repaired over 4,500 homes, and currently operate in 11 cities: Kiryat Gat, Kiryat Malachi, Binyamina, Hatzor, BeitShemesh, Jerusalem, Hadera, Or Akiva, Pardes Hanna, Ramla and Lod.
Unfortunately, we are only able to respond to a third of the cases referred to us due to financial constraints. To increase our impact, we aim to continue raising funds from generous donors, both in Israel and throughout the world.
“Our goal: wiping out Israel’s heartbreaking housing cases!”
Abby Gast Strenger, Tenufa Bakehila’s Head Social Worker
